Afin de comprendre ce qu’est cette technologie et ce qu’elle permet de faire, il est fondamental de dissocier Blockchain et Bitcoin.

Ainsi, le Bitcoin est une crypto-monnaie née suite à la crise de confiance de 2008 envers les institutions financières, et qui a vu une ascension fulgurante ces dernières années.

La Blockchain est quant à elle née grâce au Bitcoin et à son émergence, mais ce sont deux entités différentes. La Blockchain est la technologie sous-jacente au Bitcoin, qui a permis son succès et qui permet de lui assurer une sécurité quasi-inviolable.

Les différents types de Blockchain

Il existe différent types de Blockchain : des publiques, des privées et des hybrides.

Les deux principales Blockchain publiques sont celle du Bitcoin et celle de l’Ethereum, deux crypto-monnaies. Ces réseaux distribués et libres d’accès sont les premières Blockchain ayant vu le jour et rencontré un succès planétaire.

J’ai donc choisi ici de me concentrer essentiellement sur les caractéristiques des Blockchain publiques, afin d’expliquer les bases du fonctionnement de cette technologie.

La Blockchain, qu’est-ce que c’est ?

La Blockchain est une technologie originellement créée dans le but de faciliter les transactions monétaires. Elle permet le stockage et la transmission d’informations.

C’est ainsi une chaîne de transactions ouverte et publique pour tous, sécurisée et fonctionnant sans organe de contrôle. Elle constitue un registre distribué entre ses utilisateurs et horodaté.

Pourquoi la Blockchain ?

Le volume de transactions à travers le monde augmente de façon exponentielle, et amplifiera certainement les complexités, les vulnérabilités, les inefficacités et les coûts des systèmes de transaction actuels. Surtout avec l’arrivée des IoT (« Internet of Things », terme désignant les objets connectés), qui multiplient les échanges de données. Ces problématiques induisent la nécessité de mieux sécuriser et automatiser les systèmes d’information des institutions privées et publiques. En particulier pour certaines données sensibles, comme les données bancaires, les données de santé ou les données biométriques.

Comment est née la Blockchain ?

Officiellement, le fondateur du Bitcoin (et donc de la première Blockchain) porte un nom : Satoshi Nakamoto. Mais en réalité, personne ne sait s’il s’agit d’un homme, d’une femme, ou même d’un groupe de personnes. Cette réalité reflète bien la « zone d’ombre » qui existe autour de la Blockchain.

Plutôt que de chercher à identifier un héros, ou un coupable, j’ai préféré me renseigner sur les principales étapes d’identification de cette technologie.

Dans le langage courant des amateurs de crypto-monnaies, le terme « mineur » peut à la fois correspondre à une personne physique cherchant à tirer un bénéfice de la production de crypto-monnaies, et à une machine dont le but est concrètement de « miner », donc de produire ces crypto-monnaies, et qui appartient alors à une personne physique ou morale. Cette différence prête souvent à confusion.

Chaque machine « mineuse » possède sa propre signature électronique. Une personne physique ou morale peut alors posséder plusieurs machines et les faire fonctionner simultanément pour essayer de miner le prochain bloc. Si sa machine parvient à miner un bloc, celui-ci lui sera alors attribué grâce à la reconnaissance instantanée de sa signature électronique et suite à sa validation par l’ensemble du réseau.

Le rôle des mineurs de crypto-monnaies dans une Blockchain publique dépasse largement celui de la production de celles-ci. En effet, comme nous l’avons vu plus tôt, ce qui fait le succès de la Blockchain est son caractère immuable, et sécurisé. L’existence de tels avantages est due au fait que les informations partagées sur un réseau Blockchain sont distribuées entre les pairs qui s’y connectent. Ceux-ci représentent des milliers de périphériques dispersés à travers le monde, ce qui rend plus compliquée la tâche de hacker la chaîne.

Les nœuds, des éléments essentiels au bon fonctionnement de la Blockchain

Tout périphérique (qu’il s’agisse d’un ordinateur, d’un smartphone, d’un IoT ou d’un serveur) qui se connecte à l’interface d’une Blockchain peut être considéré comme un nœud, dans le sens où il communique avec les autres d’une manière ou d’une autre. Le système de nœuds est au cœur même du principe de distribution de l’information qui régit la Blockchain.

Suivant cette logique, chaque machine minant sur le réseau a donc deux rôles dans une Blockchain publique : celui de produire des crypto-monnaies, et celui de partager et valider les informations comprises dans les blocs qui sont émis.

Les différents types de nœuds

A l’inverse des mineurs qui doivent investir dans du matériel et des logiciels de minage onéreux pour produire des crypto-monnaies, il est également possible pour toute personne d’exécuter un nœud de validation complet sur une Blockchain publique à l’aide d’un simple ordinateur et ainsi participer à la chaîne de validation.

Il existe donc différents types de nœuds. Leurs fonctions principales sont de sauvegarder l’historique des transactions effectuées sur le réseau depuis sa création et de vérifier et valider les composantes des transaction.

La fonction de hachage est à la base de la Blockchain, qu’elle soit publique, privée ou hybride.

Il existe différentes fonctions de hashage, mais « SHA-256 » est celle utilisée par la Blockchain. Sa particularité est que, quel que soit le résultat qui entre dans la fonction, celui qui en sortira sera toujours sous la forme d’un code de 256 caractères (lettres & chiffres). Une fois les données passées par cette fonction de hashage, on ne pourra ensuite plus déterminer le résultat de base.

Pour résumer, le hachage :

Est toujours le même pour un fichier X.
Permet la vérification des données.
- Si une personne enregistre un fichier X dans la Blockchain a un moment donné, il lui suffira de passer ce même fichier X par la fonction de hashage plus tard et évaluer la correspondance entre les deux pour prouver son authenticité.
Ne dépend pas de la taille d’un fichier.
- Il aura donc le même poids, qu’il s’agisse d’un simple texte comme « abc » ou d’une vidéo pesant 4 gigas.

Concrètement, une Blockchain est une « chaîne de blocs ». La composition d’un bloc d’une Blockchain dépend de son protocole. On retrouve tout de même certaines caractéristiques communes à toutes les Blockchain.

Ainsi, quel que soit le type de Blockchain, chaque bloc :

Est une suite binaire de 1 et de 0.

De quoi est composé un « Bloc » d’une Blockchain publique ?

En ce qui concerne les Blockchain publiques, Bitcoin et Ethereum ont des protocoles différents, mais certaines caractéristiques leur sont communes. Notamment, elles fonctionnent toutes deux grâce à la Proof of Work.

Pour ces deux Blockchain, chaque bloc émis comporte donc également la signature du mineur qui l’a créé et une preuve de travail unique.

A chaque Blockchain son protocole.

Chaque Blockchain a son propre protocole, qui prédéfinit ses règles d’utilisation.

A titre d’exemple, le protocole de la Blockchain Bitcoin indique que la capacité maximale de Bitcoin pouvant être émis est de 21 millions, et qu’un Bitcoin est émis toutes les 10 minutes.

Pour sa part, Ethereum n’a pas de limite d’émission fixe, mais Vitalik Buterin a incorporé dans son modèle la possibilité d’inclure des smart contracts : des programmes informatiques qui lient deux tiers par un contrat, et qui mettent à jour la Blockchain lorsque les conditions préétablies par ce contrat sont réunies.

Les Blockchain privées ont également chacune leur protocole, qui dépendent du type de registre sur lequel elles ont été bâties.

Quelques cas d’application de la Blockchain

De nombreuses entreprises utilisent la Blockchain pour améliorer leurs rendements et proposer des services à leurs clients qui reprennent les qualités de cette technologie : transactions plus fluides, suivi permanent et transparent, horodatage…

Son application a en premier lieu rencontré un succès particulier dans les milieux des technologies de l’assurance et financières (les fameuses FinTech), puis s’est étendue à bien d’autres secteurs. On voit aujourd’hui émerger de nombreuses initiatives dans à peu près tous les secteurs en vogue.

Il est important de noter que la plupart des entreprises qui proposent des services « basés sur la Blockchain », utilisent les Blockchain publiques du Bitcoin ou de l’Ethereum. D’autres, avec plus de moyens, sont parvenues à développer leurs propres systèmes de Blockchain privées.

L’utilisation de la Blockchain s’est très vite répandue dans la sphère financière. Un bon indicateur de la mise en œuvre rapide et réussie de la technologie dans ce domaine n’est pas seulement le nombre de projets existants, mais aussi leur succès.

Cette solution fournit à ses utilisateurs un accès immédiat à des données sur la chaîne d’approvisionnement alimentaire – de la ferme au consommateur, en passant par le magasin. Son application permet un meilleur suivi de la fraîcheur des aliments, de leur durabilité, des déchets alimentaires, ou encore des éventuelles fraudes.

Certains projets basés sur la Blockchain ont rencontré moins de succès… C’est le cas du projet Libra de Facebook. Cette initiative d’un premier « stablecoin mondial » annoncée il y a quelques mois par le réseau social aux 2,5 milliards d’utilisateurs qui a beaucoup fait parler d’elle, tant pour son caractère innovant que pour les doutes que la perspective d’une telle montée en puissance du géant américain provoque dans l’esprit des gens, surtout après l’affaire Cambridge Analytica.

Une mauvaise utilisation du mot « Blockchain » ?

L’Estonie est devenue un exemple en matière de distribution de l’information, notamment avec le logiciel X-ROAD, qui est basé sur une architecture distribuée dans laquelle toutes les données sont échangées directement entre le consommateur et le fournisseur de données.

Ce logiciel s’apparente à la Blockchain, néanmoins le NIIS (Nordic Insitute for Interoperability Solutions), une organisation commune fondée par les gouvernements estonien et finlandais responsable de l’administration du développement de X-Road, a publié un article approfondi sur sa mauvaise compréhension par le grand public et l’abus du mot « Blockchain » dans le monde.

La Blockchain, plus qu’une simple technologie

La Blockchain est plus qu’une simple technologie, c’est une nouvelle façon de faire des affaires qui démocratise, transforme, sécurise et améliore les processus commerciaux. Elle supprime l’anonymat en augmentant la transparence, ce qui permet d’instaurer la confiance. C’est un changement fondamental dans la façon dont nous collaborons, faisons des transactions, supprimons les frictions et nous développons.

Ces changements dans notre façon de traiter l’information vont profondément modifier nos méthodes de travail et de coopération, et certainement les améliorer, à condition que l’acceptation de la Blockchain par les individus se fasse.

C’est donc le rôle des institutions que de sensibiliser les individus aux atouts de cette technologie révolutionnaire qui est déjà étudiée et utilisée dans la grande majorité des secteurs, et que beaucoup ont tendance à assimiler aux les crypto-monnaies. Il est également important de peser l’utilisation du mot « Blockchain », qui a tendance à mal être interprété.

La Blockchain, une technologie d’avenir

Selon le célèbre cabinet de conseil et de recherches Gartner, la Blockchain passe aujourd’hui par une phase de désillusion, et les premières solutions complètes et améliorées vont émerger dans les années à venir : une joie pour tous le amateurs du sujet.

Gros bémol : nécessitant beaucoup de puissance informatique, son utilisation influe sur le réchauffement climatique. Il faut donc motiver les initiatives qui ont pour objectif de modifier ses usages, et ainsi la rendre encore plus sécurisée et moins nocive pour la planète, à l’image de la Proof of Stake.

Description du Bitcoin par Satoshi Nakamoto, issue de son livre blanc paru en 2008, que j’ai choisi de traduire de l’anglais au français :

« Une version purement peer-to-peer de l’argent électronique permettrait d’envoyer des paiements directement d’une partie à l’autre sans passer par un institution financière. Les signatures numériques constituent une partie de la solution, mais les avantages principaux sont perdus si un tiers de confiance est toujours nécessaire pour éviter les doubles dépenses. Nous proposons une solution au problème du double emploi en utilisant un réseau peer-to-peer. Le réseau horodate les transactions en les intégrant dans une chaîne continue de preuve de travail basée sur le hashage, formant un dossier qui ne peut être modifié sans refaire la preuve du travail. La chaîne la plus longue ne sert pas seulement de preuve de la séquence des événements observés, mais de preuve qu’elle provenait du plus grand pool de puissance CPU. Tant qu’une majorité de la puissance de l’unité centrale est contrôlée par des nœuds qui ne coopèrent pas pour s’attaquer au réseau, ils génèreront la plus longue chaîne et dépasseront les attaquants. Le réseau lui-même requiert une structure minimale. Les messages sont diffusés sur la base du meilleur effort et les nœuds peuvent quitter et rejoindre le réseau à leur gré, en acceptant la plus longue chaîne de preuve du travail comme preuve de ce qui s’est passé pendant leur absence. »
